If you are looking for a blend of history and adventure near the Alkesh Dinesh Mody Adhyaatm Campus, a day trip to Bhaja Caves and the neighbouring Lohagad Fort is highly recommended. These twin historic landmarks are located just across the valley from Karla.
Bhaja Caves: Silent & Peaceful
Unlike the larger Karla Caves, Bhaja is a group of 22 rock-cut Buddhist caves that offer a quieter, more meditative experience. Built around the 2nd century BC, Bhaja is famous for its collection of 14 stupas containing the relics of Buddhist monks, and the famous carving of a figure dancing with music players.
Lohagad Fort: The Iron Fort
A few kilometres from Bhaja is Lohagad Fort, a formidable hill fort that was once a strategic stronghold for various dynasties, including the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort stands at an altitude of 1,033 meters and features massive gates (Dalas) that remain fully intact today.
Trekking and Sightseeing Route
- Start early from ADMAC and reach the base of Bhaja Caves. Climb the gentle steps (approx. 15-20 minutes) to explore the caves.
- From Bhaja, you can take a local cab or drive up to Malavli / Lohagad Wadi, the base village for the fort.
- The climb to Lohagad Fort is relatively easy, with stone steps laid out all the way. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the top.
- Explore the Vinchu Kata (scorpion's tail) point at the fort, which extends out into the valley.
Quick Tip: Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, especially during monsoon when the steps can get slippery. The view from the top of Lohagad during rainy season is absolutely stunning, with clouds passing directly through the fort gates.
